Adcal-D3®
Chewable Tablets
Useful information to help you take your tablets
correctly
Please
read this leaflet carefully before taking your
tablets. If there is anything you do not understand
about Adcal-D3 or you
wish to know more please contact your doctor or
pharmacist (chemist) before taking Adcal-D3
tablets.
If you
are looking after somebody who is taking Adcal-D3
tablets please read this leaflet before
administering their treatment. Also keep this
leaflet until you have finished the medication, you
may want to read it again.
What is
in your Adcal-D3 chewable
tablets?
Adcal-D3
contains 1500mg calcium carbonate, equivalent to 600mg
calcium and 400iu vitamin D3.
The tablets are chewable white, flat faced and circular
in shape. Adcal-D3
tablets also contain xylitol, modified maize starch,
sodium saccharin, magnesium stearate, soya oil and
propylene glycol as a constituent of the flavouring. The
dry vitamin D3 type 100
CWS contains DLα-tocopherol, edible fats, gelatin,
sucrose and corn starch. Adcal-D3
is provided in packs of 10, 30, 56, 60, 90, 100 or 112
tablets.
What are
Adcal-D3 chewable tablets
used for?
Adcal-D3
contains calcium and vitamin D3
which are both essential for healthy bones and teeth.
Adcal-D3 provides extra
calcium and vitamin D3 to
your diet. It is therefore used in conditions where your
body’s calcium and vitamin D levels need to be
increased.
Adcal-D3
can be prescribed by doctors for certain bone
conditions.
Studies show
that taking calcium and vitamin D3
over a long time can prevent hip and other non vertebral
bone fractures in later life.
Are
Adcal-D3 chewable tablets
right for you?
Tell
your doctor or pharmacist before taking Adcal-D3
if you:
-
Have ever had a reaction to Adcal-D3
or any of the ingredients including calcium
carbonate and vitamin D3.
-
Have hypercalcaemia, that is, high levels of
calcium in your blood or hypercalciuria, that
is, high levels of calcium in your urine. If you
are unsure your doctor will advise you.

Have problems with your kidneys, for example
kidney stones.
-
Have sarcoidosis.
-
Are pregnant or breast feeding. In pregnancy or
lactation, Adcal-D3
should only be used under medical supervision.
-
Have previously been told by your doctor that
you have an intolerance to some sugars.
Can you
take Adcal-D3 chewable
tablets while you are using other medicines?
If you are
taking other medicines, in particular digitalis drugs (eg.
Lanoxin), diuretics, bisphosphonates, corticosteroids,
iron or fluoride medicines or tetracycline or quinolone
antibiotics, you should seek advice from your doctor
before taking Adcal-D3.
How and
when to take your Adcal-D3
chewable tablets
-
Adcal-D3 tablets
should be chewed not
swallowed whole.
- If
your doctor has given you instructions on taking
Adcal-D3 tablets
these should be followed precisely.
If
your doctor or pharmacist has not advised you, the
following may be used:
Adults,
elderly and children over 12 years of age:
-
not more than 2 tablets daily, ideally one taken
in the morning and one tablet in the evening.
-
If you are taking thyroxine, bisphosphonates,
iron or fluoride medicine or tetracycline or
quinolone antibiotics, do not take these at the
same time as Adcal-D3.
Leave a period of about 4 hours between these
medicines and taking Adcal-D3
tablets.
If you
are on long term treatment your doctor may, from
time to time, wish to check the level of calcium in
your blood and take urine samples to monitor kidney
function.
Do
Adcal-D3 chewable tablets
cause side effects?
In some
people Adcal-D3 may cause
unwanted effects, although these are usually transient.
Tell your doctor if you experience prolonged or severe
mild gastro-intestinal disturbances, eg. constipation,
wind, nausea, stomach ache or diarrhoea, hypercalcaemia,
hypercalciuria, in rare instances a skin rash may
appear. If you experience any other side effects not
mentioned whilst taking Adcal-D3,
tell your doctor immediately.
Adcal-D3
contains soya oil. If you are allergic to peanut or soya,
do not use this medicinal product.
Adcal-D3
contains a small amount of sugar (about 1.5mg per
tablet) and may be harmful to the teeth if used for a
prolonged period.
What
happens if you take too many Adcal-D3
chewable tablets (or somebody else does)?
You should
only take what your doctor recommends. If you take too
many Adcal-D3 tablets
contact your doctor if you can do so. If not, go to the
nearest hospital casualty department immediately, taking
the Adcal-D3 pack and
remaining tablets with you.
What
happens if you miss a dose?
If you
forget to take your tablet, take it as soon as possible
and continue to take the tablets as normal.
How
should you store Adcal-D3
chewable tablets?

Adcal-D3 should be
kept out of the reach of children.
- Do
not store above 25°C.
- If
the use by date has passed, return the tablets to
your pharmacist for disposal.
