Adcal®
Calcium Carbonate Equivalent to 66mg elemental calcium

Useful Information to help you take your tablets correctly

Please read this leaflet carefully before taking your tablets. If there is anything you do not understand about Adcal chewable tablets or you wish to know more contact your doctor or pharmacist (chemist) before taking Adcal chewable tablets.

If you are looking after somebody who is taking Adcal chewable tablets please read this leaflet before administering their treatment. Also keep this leaflet until you have finished the medication, you may want to read it again.

 

What is in your Adcal chewable tablets?

Each Adcal tablet contains 1500mg calcium carbonate, equivalent to 600mg calcium. The tablets are chewable white, flat faced and circular in shape. Adcal chewable tablets also contain xylitol, polydextrose, pre-gelatinised starch, sodium saccharin, magnesium stearate, propylene glycol and maltodextrin as a constituent of the flavouring. Adcal is provided in packs of 100 tablets

What are Adcal chewable tablets used for?

Each Adcal tablet contains calcium which is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Adcal provides extra calcium to your diet. It is therefore used in conditions where your body's calcium levels need to be increased. Adcal can be prescribed by doctors for certain bone conditions.

 

Are Adcal chewable tablets right for you?

Tell your doctor or pharmacist before taking Adcal if you:

  • Have ever had a reaction to Adcal or any of the ingredients including calcium carbonate.
  • Have hypercalcaemia, that is, high levels of calcium in your blood or hypercalciuria, that is, high levels of calcium in your urine. If you are unsure your doctor will advise you.
  • Have problems with your kidneys, for example kidney stones.
  • Have sarcoidosis.
  • Are pregnant or breast feeding. In pregnancy or lactation, Adcal should only be used under medical supervision.
  • Have previously been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars

Can you take Adcal chewable tablets while you are using other medication

 

If you are taking other medicines, in particular digitalis drugs (eg. Lanoxin), diuretics, thyroxine, bisphosphonates, corticosteroids, iron or fluoride medicines, quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics, you should seek advice from your doctor before taking Adcal.

 

How and when to take your Adcal chewable tablets

  • Adcal chewable tablets should be chewed not swallowed whole and taken just prior to, during or immediately following a meal.
  • If your doctor has given you instructions on taking Adcal tablets these should be followed precisely.

If your doctor or pharmacist has not advised you, the following may be used;

Adults, elderly and children over 12 years of age;

  • not more than 2 tablets daily, ideally one taken in the morning and one tablet in the evening.
  • if you are taking thyroxine, bisphosphonates, iron or fluoride medicine or tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, do not take these at the same time as Adcal.

Leave a period of about 4 hours between these medicines and taking Adcal tablets. If you are on long term treatment your doctor may, from time to time wish to check the level of calcium in your blood and take urine samples to monitor kidney function.

 

Do Adcal chewable tablets cause side effects?

In some people Adcal may cause unwanted effects, although these are usually transient. Tell your doctor if you experience prolonged or severe mild gastro-intestinal disturbances, eg. constipation, wind, nausea, stomach ache or diarrhoea, hypercalcaemia, hypercalciuria, in rare instances a skin rash may appear. If you experience any other side effects not mentioned whilst taking Adcal tell your doctor immediately.

Adcal contains a small amount of sugar (about 1.5mg per tablet) and may be harmful to teeth if used for a prolonged period.

What happens if you take too many Adcal chewable tablets (or somebody else does)?

You should only take what your doctor recommends. If you take too many Adcal tablets contact your doctor if you can do so. If not, go to the nearest hospital casualty department immediately, taking the Adcal pack and remaining tablets with you.

What happens if you miss a dose?

If you forget to take your tablet, take it as soon as possible and continue to take the tablets as normal.

How should you store Adcal chewable tablets?

  • Adcal tablets should be kept out of the reach of children.
  • Keep blister strips in the original outer carton.
  • Keep tablets in the original blister package.
  • Do not store above 25°C.
  • If the use by date has passed, return the tablets to your pharmacist for disposal.
