FOR RECTAL ADMINISTRATION ONLY

Alvedon® Suppositories 125 mg

(Paracetamol)

Please read this leaflet before you give these suppositories to your child. It has been designed to help you understand your child’s medicine more fully. If you have questions or are not sure about anything, ask your child’s doctor or pharmacist. Remember this medicine is only for your child. Never give it to anyone else even if their symptoms are similar to yours.

WHAT IS IN YOUR CHILD’S SUPPOSITORIES?

Each suppository contains 125 mg of Paracetamol. Each suppository also contains hard fat (Witepsol H12). A suppository is a small, cone shaped medicine which is designed for insertion into the back passage (rectum). Alvedon suppositories come as a pack of 10 suppositories. Paracetamol is one of a group of medicines with analgesic (painkiller) and anti-pyretic (reduces fever) activity.

WHAT ARE THESE SUPPOSITORIES USED FOR?

These suppositories can be used to treat pain and a high temperature (fever) in children. They are for use in children who are unable, or find it difficult, to take paracetamol tablets or syrup.

BEFORE USING THESE SUPPOSITORIES

Do not give your child these suppositories if your child is allergic to paracetamol or hard fat.

Contact your doctor before using these suppositories if your child

  • suffers from any liver or kidney problems
  • is taking barbiturates, anti-convulsants or any medicine for epilepsy or fits
  • is taking warfarin or any medicine for treating blood clots

Do not give your child alcohol, or any medicines containing alcohol whilst they are being given these suppositories.

USING THESE SUPPOSITORIES

1. Look at the label on the box.

To be used in children 1-5 years old. The dosage should be based on your child’s age and weight i.e.

  • 1 year (10 kg) – 1 suppository
  • 5 years (20 kg ) – 2 suppositories

These doses may be repeated up to 4 times a day. They should not be given more often than every 4 hours.

If you are not sure how many suppositories to give your child, don’t guess, ask your child’s doctor or a pharmacist.

DO NOT EXCEED THE STATED DOSE.

2. If your child needs to go to the toilet then ensure that they do so, and that the bowels are empty before they are given these suppositories.

3. Before using the suppository you may find it easier to lie your child on their front or side. Do whichever is more comfortable for your child.

4. Wash your hands then peel the wrapping apart to remove the suppository. Do not break the suppository before use.

5. Gently push the suppository into your child’s back passage, pointed end first. Then wash your hands.

6. Try to keep your child still for a minute or two. If your child needs to be given another suppository remove another one from the wrapper and insert it into your child’s back passage as before.

Once again you should try to keep your child still for a minute or two. Then wash your hands.

7. If you forget to give the suppositories, make sure that you give them to your child as soon as you remember, then go on as before. Don’t give your child a double dose next time.

8. Immediate medical advice should be sought in the event of an overdose, even if the child seems well, because of the risk of delayed, serious liver damage.

AFTER GIVING YOUR CHILD THE SUPPOSITORIES

Alvedon suppositories can sometimes cause problems.

If your child gets any type of skin trouble such as a rash or itching for the first time, or a soreness in or around their back passage, tell your child’s doctor.

Also tell the doctor if your child bleeds easily, becomes more susceptible to infection, develops a fever with mouth and throat ulcers, or similar.

Alvedon Suppositories contain paracetamol which can rarely cause liver damage.

If your child suffers from any other unusual or unexpected symptoms, talk to your child’s doctor or pharmacist (chemist).
