PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET

CHLORPHENAMINE TABLETS BP 4mg

The active ingredient in this medicine is Chlorphenamine. This is the new name for Chlorpheniramine. The ingredient itself has not changed.

Please read this leaflet carefully before you start to take your medicine. It gives you important information about your medicine. If you want to know more, or you are not sure about anything, ask your pharmacist or doctor. Keep the leaflet until you have finished the medicine.

 

WHAT'S IN YOUR MEDICINE

Chlorphenamine Tablets BP are yellow, circular, uncoated tablets which come in one strength. Each tablet contains 4mg of the active ingredient chlorphenamine maleate.

The tablets also contain: calcium sulphate, magnesium stearate, maize starch, E172, E460.Chlorphenamine Tablets BP 4mg are available in pack sizes of 28s, 30s, 50s, 56s, 60s, 84s, 90s, 100s, 112s, 120s, 168s, 180s, 250s, 500s, 1000s, 50000s.

Chlorphenamine is one of a group of medicines called antihistamines.

ABOUT YOUR MEDICINE

The name of your medicine is Chlorphenamine Tablets BP which is the generic (common) name. Your doctor may have given you this medicine before from another company and it may have looked slightly different. Either brand will have the same effect.Chlorphenamine may be used:

  • to control the symptoms of allergic conditions such as hay fever, runny nose, itchy skin, swelling of the face especially the tongue, food allergy, reactions to drugs or vaccines and insect bites.
 

BEFORE TAKING YOUR MEDICINE

Make sure you have told your doctor if you:

  • are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast feeding.
  • are sensitive to any of the ingredients in the product or any other antihistamine drug.
  • have epilepsy.
  • have liver, lung or heart disease.
  • have high blood pressure or are being treated for high blood pressure.
  • have an enlarged prostate gland.
  • have increased pressure in the eye (glaucoma).
  • have asthma.
  • have an overactive thyroid gland.
  • are taking other medicines such as drugs to treat depression (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine) or have taken them within the last 14 days, sleeping tablets and tranquillisers, phenytoin and including any that you can buy without prescription. You are advised NOT to drink alcohol with this medicine.Chlorphenamine may make you feel drowsy, dizzy or have blurred vision. Make sure you are not affected before you drive or operate machinery.

If you see another doctor or go into hospital let them know what medicines you are taking.

 

 

TAKING YOUR MEDICINE

Your doctor has decided the dose that is best for you. Always follow your doctor's instructions exactly, and those on the pharmacy label. If you do not understand anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

The usual dosage(s) are described below:

  • Adults: 1 tablet every 4-6 hours to a maximum daily dose of 6 tablets (24mg).

  •  
  • Children under 12 years: Not recommended. Should only be given under the instructions of your doctor.

These tablets should be taken as instructed swallowed with a glass of water.

If you forget to take a dose, take another as soon as you remember and then your next dose at the usual time. NEVER take two doses at the same time.

If you are elderly, it is particularly important to take this medicine exactly as directed by the doctor.

If you accidentally take more than your prescribed dose, contact your nearest hospital casualty department, or tell your doctor, immediately. Take any remaining tablets and the container with you.

 

AFTER TAKING YOUR MEDICINE

Like many medicines, Chlorphenamine Tablets BP 4mg may occasionally cause side effects in some patients, particularly when you first start taking it. These may include drowsiness or sleep, difficulty concentrating, weariness, blurred vision, feeling or being sick, diarrhoea, difficulty passing water, headache, dry mouth, dizziness, thumping heart beat (palpitations), irregular or fast heart beats, low blood pressure, tight chest, stomach pain, indigestion, loss of appetite, liver changes including jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), thickening of phlegm, blood changes, skin rashes which may be itchy, sensitivity of the skin to light, twitching, muscular weakness and in co-ordination, ringing or buzzing in the ears, depression, irritability, nightmares, excitation especially in children and mental changes which are more common in the elderly. You should consult your doctor if these are troublesome or continue. If you notice you are getting more frequent sore throats or infections or you are bruising more easily and have nosebleeds, or your skin and eyes are yellow you should consult your doctor immediately.

If you get any other unusual effects, tell your doctor immediately and seek advice.

STORING YOUR MEDICINE

Do not use the tablets after the expiry date shown on the product packaging. Keep the tablets below 25°C in a dry place, and in the original packaging. KEEP THEM IN A SECURE PLACE WHERE CHILDREN CANNOT GET AT THEM. REMEMBER, this medicine is for YOU only. NEVER give it to anyone else. It may harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours. Unless your doctor tells you to, do not keep medicines that you no longer need - give them back to your pharmacist for safe disposal.
