About
Dermol 500 Lotion
The name of
your treatment is Dermol 500 Lotion.
The lotion contains four active ingredients. These are
benzalkonium chloride (0.1%), chlorhexidine
hydrochloride (0.1%), liquid paraffin (2.5%) and
isopropyl myristate (2.5%). The inactive ingredients are
cetostearyl alcohol, cetomacrogol 1000, phenoxyethanol
and purified water. The lotion is white, slightly
viscous and has no fragrance. It is available in 500 ml
plastic bottles fitted with a convenient pump dispenser.
(For professional purposes only,
small 50 ml squeeze-bottles are available to medical and
allied professions.)
The active
ingredients have two functions: benzalkonium chloride
and chlorhexidine hydrochloride have antimicrobial
activity; liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate are
emollients (moisturisers).
Dermol 500 Lotion is
formulated for use on dry or problem skin to help treat
and prevent the dryness and itching (pruritus) which are
common features of skin complaints like eczema and
dermatitis. The emollients form a barrier within the
skin surface, trapping the moisture in deeper layers of
skin and reducing drying. The antimicrobial ingredients
combat the aggravating bacteria already present on the
skin which make certain types of eczema worse.
Dermol 500 Lotion is also
designed to be used as a soap substitute. This is
advantageous because ordinary toiletry soaps can make
dry skin worse by removing its natural oils.
When NOT
to use Dermol 500 Lotion
Dermol 500 Lotion is NOT to be
used by patients who are sensitive to any of its
ingredients (as listed on page 1).
For
your safety
Take
care to avoid the lotion getting into the eyes. If
this should occur, rinse the eyes thoroughly with
plenty of warm water. Consult a doctor if irritation
persists. If a significant quantity is accidentally
swallowed, consult a doctor or hospital straight
away.
How to
use Dermol 500 Lotion
Dermol 500 Lotion is for
external use only.
Before use,
turn the top of the pump dispenser anti-clockwise to
unlock it.
The same
instructions apply to adults, children and the elderly:
For application to the skin:
-
Apply Dermol 500 Lotion
to the affected areas.
-
Massage well into the skin until absorbed.
-
Repeat as often as required.
For use as a soap substitute:
-
Use Dermol 500 Lotion
as a cleanser in the bath or shower, or for
other toiletry purposes, instead of ordinary
soap or shower gel.
-
Preferably, the water temperature should be
warm, not hot – to minimise removal of natural
oils from the skin.
-
Pat dry with a soft towel and avoid rubbing
vigorously because this makes dry skin
conditions worse.
During
your treatment
Dermol 500 Lotion has been
specially formulated for use on dry or problem skin.
Normally, there should be no ill effects from its use.
On rare occasions, creams and lotions can give rise to
irritant or allergic reactions on sensitive skin. These
problems tend to develop after the first few
applications. Although unlikely to occur with
Dermol 500 Lotion, for
patients with very sensitive skin, it is generally
advisable to start any new treatment on a small area.
This is especially important when treating the face or
young children. Thereafter, treatments can be applied
more generously, as required. If a reaction occurs, stop
using Dermol 500 Lotion and
consult your doctor. If you are in any doubt about the
treatment, or notice any side-effects, you should talk
to the doctor or pharmacist.
How to
store Dermol 500 Lotion
After use,
it is advisable to turn the top of the pump clockwise to
lock it.
Do not store
Dermol 500 Lotion above 25°C.
Keep it in a safe place where children cannot see or
reach it. Use within 18 months of first opening, and not
after the expiry date shown on the label.

Breaking the itch-scratch cycle
Dry skin
conditions like eczema and dermatitis are
notoriously itchy, and can be quite sore. Although
scratching relieves the itching for a short while,
it also damages the skin. Badly scratched skin
easily gets infected, which makes it more itchy and
the urge to scratch becomes even greater. Clearly,
it is better if scratching is avoided, even though
many people, especially children, find this very
difficult.
