What you need to know about DIFFLAM Oral Rinse

Please read this carefully before you start to use your medication. This leaflet only provides a summary of the information available on your medicine. If you have any questions or are not sure about anything, ask your doctor, dentist or pharmacist.

The name of your medication is DIFFLAM Oral Rinse

DIFFLAM Oral Rinse is a clear, green coloured gargle solution which contains an active ingredient called benzydamine. Each 15 ml contains 22.5 mg benzydamine hydrochloride. The solution also contains the following inactive ingredients: glycerol, saccharin sodium, mouthwash flavour 52 503/T Firmenich, polysorbate 20, methylhydroxybenzoate, Quinoline Yellow (E104) and Patent Blue V (E131), purified water. Each 15 ml of solution also contains 1.5 ml of alcohol (ethanol). The original bottle contains 300 ml.

What your medication is prescribed for

Benzydamine is a locally-acting analgesic and anti-inflammatory. This means it will help to relieve pain and reduce swelling. It can be used to treat many painful and inflammatory conditions of the throat and mouth such as sore throat, mouth ulcers, and after effects of oral surgery.

Do not use DIFFLAM Oral Rinse if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Take special care before using DIFFLAM Oral Rinse. If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or are trying to become pregnant, please tell your doctor or dentist before using this solution.

  • This solution should not be used by children aged 12 years or under.
  • Do not splash this solution into your eyes.
  • If you see any other doctor or dentist, please tell them that you are using DIFFLAM Oral Rinse.

How to use Difflam Oral Rinse

 

Please follow the instructions given to you by your doctor or dentist.

 
The usual dose is 15 ml of solution to be used every one-and-a-half to three hours for relief of pain. The solution should be rinsed around the mouth or used as a gargle for 20 to 30 seconds and then spat out. This solution should not be swallowed.
  • This solution should not be used for more than 7 days unless your doctor or dentist tells you to.
  • If your condition gets worse or does not get better, please tell your doctor, dentist or pharmacist.
  • If you are not sure how much solution to use or when to use it, please ask your doctor, dentist or pharmacist.

What to do in case of accidental overdosage

Please contact your nearest hospital casualty department, or tell your doctor, immediately.

What might happen when you are using DIFFLAM Oral Rinse

  • Like other medications, this solution may cause some side-effects.
  • After using this solution your mouth may feel numb. This is harmless and will disappear with time. If this solution stings your mouth, the next dose can be diluted with some water to reduce this effect.
  • If you notice any other side-effects, please tell your doctor, dentist or pharmacist.
  • As with all medicines some people may be allergic to DIFFLAM. Usually, if you are allergic, a reaction will occur soon after using the product. An allergic reaction can occur as a rash, small red spots on the skin, itching, or the skin may also become more sensitive to sunlight. In rare cases, difficulty in breathing and swelling of the throat may occur, which may need emergency treatment.

Storing your medication

  • Store this solution in a safe place where children cannot reach it.
  • Store this solution between 5°C and 30°C. Do not freeze. If you store the product without the original carton, make sure it is kept out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not use this product after the expiry date printed on the original carton.
  • If your doctor or dentist decides to stop treatment, return any unused solution to your doctor or pharmacist.
