PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET

Difflam Metered Dose Spray (Benzydamine Hydrochloride)

The information in this leaflet provides information about Difflam Spray. Please read the leaflet carefully BEFORE you start to use this medicine. If you have any further questions about Difflam Spray, or are not sure about anything, ask your pharmacist for help.

What is in the spray?

This spray bottle holds 30ml of medicine called Difflam Spray, a clear liquid containing an ingredient called benzydamine hydrochloride. Each puff from the spray (175 microlitres) contains 262.5 micrograms of benzydamine hydrochloride. The liquid also contains the following ingredients: ethanol, glycerol, saccharin, sodium hydrogen carbonate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate, mouthwash flavour 52 503/T Firmenich, polysorbate 20, purified water. Each puff contains 15 microlitres of alcohol (ethanol).

What is Difflam Spray for?

Benzydamine, the active ingredient in Difflam Spray, acts locally to stop pain and inflammation. Difflam Spray can be sprayed directly into the mouth or throat to relieve pain, soreness and swelling. It can be used to treat many painful conditions of the mouth or throat, including mouth ulcers, teething, sore throat, sore tongue or gums and discomfort associated with dentures or dental work.

Points to check before using Difflam Spray

  • As with all medicines, tell your pharmacist or doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant.
  • Tell your pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines.
  • Do not use this spray in or near your eyes; if this happens accidentally, wash your eyes immediately with cold water.
  • Do not use Difflam Spray if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

How to use Difflam Spray

A puff of Difflam Spray should be sprayed onto the sore area according to the following instructions:

  • Adults: use 4 to 8 puffs every 1½ to 3 hours.
  • Children aged 6-12 years: use 4 puffs every 1½ to 3 hours.
  • Children under 6 years of age (treatment is based on weight): 1 puff for each 4 kilograms of body weight, up to a maximum of 4 puffs at any one time. This dose should be used every 1½ to 3 hours. If you are not sure how many puffs to use or when to use them, you should ask your pharmacist for help.

If the condition gets worse, or does not get better, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.

Instructions for use

1. Use the spray bottle in an upright position. 2. Lift the spray-tube at right angles (90 degrees). Do not raise the spray-tube more than shown in the diagram.

3. The first time you use the spray, point the nozzle away from your face and press the green plunger down firmly, several times, until a fine spray appears out of the end of the spray-tube. It is now ready for use.

4. Aim the spray-tube at the sore part of your mouth or throat and press down on the green plunger again. One press releases one puff.
5. After applying the correct number of puffs (see overleaf), wipe the end of the spray-tube with a tissue. This helps prevent blockage. 6. Push the spray-tube back down as shown. This stops any more puffs being released.

7. Do not try to push anything into the end of the spray-tube. If a blockage occurs, return the spray to your pharmacist.

What to do in case of an accidental overdose

If you use too many puffs of Difflam Spray by mistake, you should contact your pharmacist, doctor or nearest hospital casualty department immediately.

What might happen when using Difflam Spray?

Like most other medicines, this spray may cause some side-effects.

After using the spray your mouth may feel numb; this is nothing to worry about and will soon disappear. Occasionally, some people feel a stinging sensation when they first start using the spray; this usually disappears with continued use. If the stinging does not go away, you should stop using the spray and talk to your pharmacist or doctor.

If you notice any other side-effects, or if any side-effects continue for more than a few days, you should tell your pharmacist or doctor.

As with all medicines some people may be allergic to Difflam. Usually, if you are allergic, a reaction will occur soon after using the product. An allergic reaction can occur as a rash, small red spots on the skin, itching, or the skin may also become more sensitive to sunlight. In rare cases, difficulty in breathing and swelling of the throat may occur, which may need emergency treatment.

If you experience any of these symptoms, stop the treatment and seek medical advice immediately.
