What you should know about
Doublebase™

About
Doublebase
The name of
your treatment is Doublebase.
It is a white moisturising base and has no fragrance.
The gel contains two active ingredients, isopropyl
myristate (15%) and liquid paraffin (15%). These form a
barrier within the skin surface, trapping moisture in
the skin thereby reducing dryness. The inactive
ingredients are glycerol, carbomer, sorbitan laurate,
triethanolamine, phenoxyethanol and purified water.
Doublebase is available in 500
g plastic bottles fitted with a convenient pump
dispenser and 100 g plastic laminate tubes.
(For professional purposes only,
small 25 g packs are available to medical and allied
professions.)
Doublebase is a highly
moisturising and protective hydrating gel for regular
and frequent use in the treatment and management of dry
or chapped skin conditions which may also be itchy or
inflamed. It may be used on its own, or in conjunction
with other treatments.
When NOT
to use Doublebase
Doublebase is NOT to be used
by patients who are sensitive to any of its ingredients
(as listed on page 1).
When
using Doublebase with other treatments
Regular,
frequent use of moisturisers/emollients helps to restore
the suppleness of skin and can make treatments for
eczema and psoriasis work better.
How to
use and apply Doublebase
Doublebase is for external use
only. Before using the 500 g bottle, turn the top of the
pump dispenser anti-clockwise to unlock it.
The same
instructions apply to adults, the elderly, babies and
children.
-
Apply Doublebase to the
affected areas on a regular basis and as often as
necessary.
For best
results use a few gentle strokes to smooth
Doublebase across the skin in
the same direction as hair growth (like stroking a cat
or dog).
If
necessary, allow time for any excess to soak in.
Do not rub
vigorously.
-
Doublebase may also be
applied before
washing, showering or having a bath in order to
prevent further drying of the skin.
If
additional topical treatments are being used on the same
skin areas, Doublebase should
be applied between these
applications.
During
your treatment
Doublebase has been specially
made for use on dry or problem skin. Normally, there
should be no ill effects from its use. On rare
occasions, however, creams and gels can cause irritant
or allergic reactions. These problems tend to develop
after the first few applications. Although unlikely to
occur with Doublebase, for
patients with very delicate skin, it is generally a good
idea to start any new treatment on a small area. This is
especially important when treating the face or young
children. Thereafter, treatments can be applied to wider
areas, as required. If a reaction occurs, stop using
Doublebase and consult your
doctor. If you are in any doubt about the treatment, or
notice any side-effects, you should talk to your doctor
or a pharmacist.
How to
store Doublebase
After use,
it is advisable to turn the top of the pump clockwise on
the 500 g bottle to lock it, or replace the cap on the
tube.
Do not store
Doublebase above 25°C. Do not
freeze. Keep in a safe place where children and babies
cannot see or reach it.
Do not use
after the expiry date shown on the container.

Important tips for the treatment and management of
dry skin conditions
-
Emollients or moisturisers play a central role
in the treatment and management of dry skin
conditions. For maximum benefit they should be
applied regularly and as often as needed.
-
Try to avoid the use of conventional soaps,
bubble baths and foaming shower gels, which tend
to dry and irritate the skin, particularly in
atopic eczema.
-
When taking a bath or shower, preferably use
warm, not hot, water – to minimise removal of
natural oils from the skin. Use a small amount
of liquid bath emollient.
-
After bathing, pat dry with a soft towel and
avoid rubbing because this makes dry skin
conditions worse.
Breaking the itch-scratch cycle
Some dry
skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis are
itchy, and can be quite sore. Although scratching
relieves the itching for a short while, it further
damages the skin. Badly scratched skin easily gets
infected, which makes it more itchy and the urge to
scratch becomes even greater. Naturally, it is
better if scratching can be avoided by reducing the
itching with the regular use of emollients or
moisturisers.
Help
with emptying the 500 g Doublebase plastic bottle
If a
pocket of air forms around the bottom end of the
pump’s dip tube, you may experience difficulties
pumping Doublebase out of
the plastic bottle. This may be overcome by banging
the base of the bottle firmly onto a hard surface,
two or three times. The pump should then be pumped
SLOWLY, to discharge
the residual gel.
