What
You Should Know About folicare™
Folic acid oral solution
0.4mg(400mcg)/5ml
Please
read this leaflet carefully before taking folicare,
Folic acid oral solution and keep it handy for
reference.
If you
have any questions or are not sure about something,
ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The name
of this product is folicare™,
Folic acid oral solution 0.4mg(400mcg)/5ml.
It contains 0.4mg(400mcg) Folic acid in each 5ml
spoonful
The
product also contains glycerol (E422), mannitol
(E421), sodium dihydrogen phosphate, disodium
hydrogen phosphate (E339), methyl hydroxybenzoate
(E218), ethyl hydroxybenzoate (E214), propyl
hydroxybenzoate (E216), disodium edetate, flavouring
(containing colour E122 and propylene glycol) and
purified water.
It is
presented in bottles containing 150ml.
Folic
acid, the active ingredient in
folicare™ is
a B vitamin.
What is the Product Used For?
It has been
shown that Folic acid, the active ingredient in
folicare™,
is useful in helping to prevent babies being born with
Neural Tube Defects e.g. Spina Bifida.
0.4mg per
day of Folic acid, as in folicare™,
is the recommended dosage if this will be your first
baby or you have had a normal baby before.
You should
use this medicine if you are trying to become pregnant
and also during the first three months of your
pregnancy. It should also be used when pregnancy is
known or suspected, and continued for the first three
months of your pregnancy
Do not use this medicine
without first consulting your doctor if:-
-
if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Folic
acid or any of the other ingredients in this
liquid
-
you are taking anti-epileptic drugs such as
Phenytoin or Primidone
-
you have a tumour or cancer
-
you have pernicious anaemia or a Vitamin B12
deficiency.
This
product contains hydroxybenzoates (preservatives).
Some people are allergic to these (the allergy may
happen some time after starting the medicine)
How to Use this Product
You should
take one teaspoonful (5ml) daily of this product from
the time you start trying to conceive and continue until
the twelfth week of pregnancy. Taking it at a regular
time each day will help you to remember.
No cases of
overdose have been reported. Even extremely high doses
are unlikely to cause you any harm.
Any unwanted
effects on using this product are unlikely, however, if
you do suffer any side effects tell your doctor.
An allergic
reaction may occur to the active ingredient, folic acid,
and may be seen as a rash, swelling or, in severe cases,
difficulty in breathing. If you notice any of these
symptoms after taking the medicine then contact your
doctor immediately.
Rarely, you
may suffer from mild stomach upsets.
How To Store this Product.
The label on
the bottle shows an expiry date (month, year). Do not
use the product after this date.

Folic acid oral solution should be stored below 25°C.
Protect from light.
Keep out of
the reach and sight of children.
Once open,
the medicine should only be used for 1 month after which
time you should take it back to the chemist for safe
disposal.
