PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET

This leaflet gives a summary of information about your medicine. If you want to know more, or are not sure about anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Keep this leaflet in a safe place as you may want to read it again.

WHAT IS IN GRANEODIN OINTMENT?

The active ingredients are neomycin and gramicidin which are both antibiotics. Graneodin ointment contains neomycin (as sulphate) 0.25% w/w (1625 units/g) and gramicidin 0.025% w/w. The other ingredients are liquid paraffin and polyethylene resin. Graneodin ointment is supplied in tubes of 25g.

WHAT IS THIS MEDICINE FOR ?

Graneodin Ointment is used to treat bacterial infections of the skin such as impetigo, infected eczema, infected skin ulcers; surface infections of the ear (see below).

BEFORE USING YOUR MEDICINE:

Should I be using Graneodin Ointment ?

DO NOT use Graneodin Ointment:

  • if you know you are allergic to any of the ingredients
  • on the ear if you have a perforated ear drum
  • for a fungal infection e.g. thrush, ringworm or athlete's foot, or an infection caused by a virus, e.g. cold sores, herpes, chicken pox or shingles.
  • for very large areas of infected skin.

Go back to your doctor if you are concerned about any of the above.

What if I am pregnant or breastfeeding

The ointment works on the surface of the skin and is unlikely to be absorbed unless used over a large area or for a long time. However, you should always tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Do I have problems with my ears or hearing?

Neomycin, which is one of the active ingredients in Graneodin ointment, may be harmful to ears, particularly if it is used in large amounts and for long periods of time. Tell your doctor if you suffer from deafness or other ear problems.

Can I take other medicines ?

Graneodin ointment does not usually interact with other medicines, but always tell your doctor about any other medicines you are taking. These include medicines bought at a pharmacy or elsewhere, e.g. supermarket.

USING YOUR MEDICINE

How should I apply Graneodin Ointment?

Apply a small amount of ointment two to four times a day. Any crusts should be removed and the ointment rubbed well in. If there is no improvement after seven days, go back to your doctor.

If you are using Graneodin ointment on burnt skin that has become infected, or on open wounds, make sure you use a small amount of ointment, as these skin conditions may make it easier for the active ingredients in Graneodin to pass through the skin into the bloodstream and may increase the possibility of side-effects, especially in children, elderly and in those with kidney problems.

You should not use airtight or waterproof plasters or dressings as these also have the effect of making it easier for the active ingredients to pass through the skin. Do not use the ointment for long periods of time without returning to see your doctor.

What if a child swallows some?

You should take the child to your doctor or to the hospital casualty department, taking the ointment with you.

UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS

Are there any unwanted effects from Graneodin ?

If absorbed into the bloodstream, the active ingredient neomycin can damage the ears or the kidneys.

The ointment can produce sensitivity reactions, particularly if used for a long time. Check with your doctor if you notice that any of the following occur: blistering, burning, itching, peeling, dryness or other signs of skin irritation not present before using this ointment.

If you notice any of these or any other unwanted effect, tell your doctor or pharmacist.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR MEDICINE

Do not use your medicine after the expiry date which you will find on the ointment tube and box.

Keep all your medicines where children cannot reach or see them, preferably in a locked cupboard or medicine cabinet. Do not store Graneodin ointment above 25°C.

If your doctor decides to stop the treatment, ask your pharmacist to tell you what to do with any ointment you have left.
