Isosorbide Mononitrate

Introduction

Please read this leaflet carefully before you take this medicine. This leaflet provides a summary of the information available on your medicine. If you have any queries about this medicine, or are not sure about anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

About Your Medicine

The name of your medicine is Isotard 25XL Tablets. Each modified release tablet of Isotard 25XL contains 25mg of isosorbide-5-mononitrate.

Other ingredients are used in the manufacture of your tablets. They are polyethylene glycol, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, stearic acid, talc, purified siliceous earth, lactose, carnauba wax, magnesium stearate, and the colourings titanium dioxide (E171) and yellow iron oxide (E172).

Isotard 25XL tablets are round, cream coloured tablets with 'IM25' marked on one side.

Isotard 25XL tablets are packaged in blister packs containing 28 tablets.

Isotard 25XL is used to prevent angina (chest pain). It works by opening up blood vessels and reducing the pain.

WHAT DOES ISOTARD 25XL DO?

Isotard 25XL tablets are used to prevent attacks of angina (angina pectoris).

BEFORE TAKING YOUR MEDICINE

Do not take Isotard 25XL if you are hypersensitive to isosorbide-5-mononitrate or any of the ingredients of the tablets.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if:

  • You have low blood pressure.
  • You are at risk of having a stroke.
  • You are taking other medicines, as some medicines do not combine.
  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • You are elderly or have liver, kidney or thyroid disease.

Do not take sildenafil (Viagra) or similar products for male erectile dysfunction if you are taking Isotard 25XL. When taken together a severe and possibly dangerous fall in blood pressure can occur which may result in collapse, unconsciousness and could be fatal. You should not take Viagra whilst on Isotard 25XL Tablets.

Remember:

If you have an attack of angina your doctor will supply you with other medicines for this. Do not stop taking your Isotard 25XL tablets.

If you suffer from low blood pressure or dizziness, do not drive or operate machinery whilst taking the tablets.

HOW TO TAKE YOUR MEDICINE

The usual dose for adults is 1 or 2 tablets given in the morning. You should always take your medicine as directed by your doctor. The doctor's instructions will be on the dispensing label. If they are not, or you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Your doctor will advise you of the dose you should take.

The dose for the elderly is as for adults; however, your doctor will take special care, especially if you have low blood pressure, or liver or kidney disease.

The tablets should not be crushed or chewed but swallowed whole with half a glass of water.

This medicine is not suitable for children.

If you forget to take your tablet(s) but remember within 12 hours of the usual time, take it when you remember. If you remember more than 12 hours after your usual time, don't take it, just carry on with the next dose when it is due.

If you are unsure of anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

IF YOU TAKE TOO MANY TABLETS

Contact your nearest hospital casualty department or doctor immediately. Take this leaflet and any remaining tablets with you to show the doctor.
