ISOPTO® PLAIN 0.5%

Eye Drops, Solution

(Hypromellose)

Read all of this leaflet carefully because it contains important information for you.

This medicine is available without a prescription, for you to treat a mild illness without a doctor's help. Nevertheless, you still need to use Isopto® Plain carefully to get the best results from it.

  • Keep this leaflet. You may need to read it again.
  • Ask your pharmacist if you need more information or advice.
  • You must see a doctor if your symptoms worsen or do not improve.

The active substance is hypromellose 5 mg/ml (0.5%).

Other ingredients: benzalkonium chloride as preservative, sodium citrate, disodium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate, sodium chloride and purified water.

WHAT ISOPTO PLAIN IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR

Isopto Plain eye drops contains a substance called hypromellose which acts as an artificial tear.

Isopto Plain is supplied in a 10 ml dropper bottle.

If your doctor or pharmacist has prescribed this medicine for you to use then you will be suffering from dry eyes or eye irritation due to lack of tears in your eyes. Isopto Plain eye drops may also be used to lubricate artificial eyes.

Isopto Plain contains a substance which makes the medicine slightly thicker than water and allows the medicine to lubricate your eye.

BEFORE YOU USE ISOPTO PLAIN

In some circumstances this medicine may not be suitable for you and your doctor may wish to give you a different medicine, so:

  • If you are pregnant or intending to become pregnant.
  • If you are breastfeeding a baby.
  • If you have ever had to stop taking a medicine because you were allergic to it.

INFORM YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING TO USE THIS MEDICINE.

You must not wear soft contact lenses whilst using this medicine. As the medicine contains benzalkonium chloride which has been known to discolour soft contact lenses.

You may experience temporary blurred vision when using this medicine. Do not drive or operate hazardous machinery unless your vision is clear.

HOW TO USE ISOPTO PLAIN

Adults (including elderly) and Children

The recommended dose and frequency of treatment is one or two drops in each affected eye three times daily or as specified by your doctor or pharmacist.

HOW TO PUT THE EYE DROPS IN YOUR EYE

Isopto® Plain is packaged in a specially designed container, DROPTAINER®, for ease of use. Follow the instructions below for the correct use of this medicine.

To prevent contamination of your medicine do not allow the dropper to touch your eye or any other surface.

 

By following the 10 steps listed below you will ensure that Isopto Plain is being used correctly and to the best effect.

 
1. Wash your hands before using Isopto Plain.
2. Sit down in front of a mirror so that you can see what you are doing.
3. Remove the cap from the bottle.
4. Make sure the dropper tip does not touch anything as this may contaminate the contents.
5. Hold the bottle upside down in one hand between your thumb and middle finger.
6. Using the forefinger of your other hand gently pull down the lower eyelid of the affected eye.
7. Place the dropper bottle tip close to, but not touching, your eye and gently tap the base of the bottle with your forefinger so that one or two drops, as directed, fall into the gap between the eye and the lower lid.
8. Now release the lower eyelid, and blink a few times to make sure the whole of the eye is covered by the liquid.
9. Repeat steps 5 to 8, above, for the other eye, if necessary.
10. Replace and tightly close the cap on the dropper bottle.
 

POSSIBLE SIDE-EFFECTS

You may experience mild stinging in your eye or blurred vision. This will not last for long, if it does then stop using the medicine and see your doctor or pharmacist.

If the irritation in your eye does not get better, if it gets worse or you start to experience headache, eye pain, vision changes or continued redness in your eye, then you should stop using this medicine and see your doctor.

If you experience any other reactions after using Isopto Plain then tell your doctor or pharmacist and follow his advice.

STORING ISOPTO PLAIN

  • Keep Isopto Plain in a safe place out of the reach and sight of children.
  • Keep the container tightly closed and do not store above 25°C. Do not refrigerate.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date shown as "EXP" on the label and carton.
  • This medicine must be discarded one month after opening.
