What you should know about Kelfizine W Tablets

Please read this leaflet carefully before you use your medicine. This leaflet provides some useful information for you on your medicine. If you have any questions about anything, please ask your doctor or pharmacist.

What's in your medicine?

The name of your medicine is Kelfizine W Tablets. Each tablet contains 2g of the active Ingredient sulfametopyrazine. The tablets also contain microcrystalline cellulose (E460), sodium carboxymethycellulose (E466), maize starch, amylose, sodium lauryl sulphate, purified talc, magnesium stearate, and saccharin sodium as well as mandarin and lemon flavourings. Your medicine is packed in cartons of 4,5 or 6 tablets. Each tablet is packed in individual blisters.

What is your medicine for?

Kelfizine W is a sulphonamide antibiotic which is used to treat infections caused by bacteria which are sensitive to the drug. Kelfizine W may be used to treat chronic bronchitis or urinary-tract infections.

How does your medicine work?

Kelfizine W prevents bacteria from manufacturing an assential nutrient required for growth and multiplication. In time, the number of bacteria is reduced and the infection is controlled.

Before taking your medicine

If you answer YES to any of the following questions, speak to your doctor BEFORE taking Kelfizine W tablets:

  • Are you pregnant or breast feeding?
  • Have you had an allergic reaction (e.g. rash, wheezing), to sulfametopyrazine or other sulphonamide antibiotics?
  • Are you taking any other medicines, particularly anticoagulants of the coumarin-type (they thin your blood or stop it clotting), sulphonylureas (antidiabetic agents), trimethoprim, pyrimethamine or paraminobenzoic acid?
  • Do you suffer from:
    • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)?
    • an intestinal obstruction?
    • kidney disease?

Kelfizine W tablets are not recommended for use in children

How should you take your medicine?

Read the pharmacy label to remind yourself of how your doctor wants you to take Kelfizine W tablets.

The usual dose is one tablet weekly. You should try to take the tablet on the same day each week.

The tablets should be stirred into half a tumblerful of water or orange squash.

Make sure that you drink plenty of fluids while you are taking Kelfizine W tablets.

How long should you take your medicine?

Your doctor will advise you of the length of treatment.

What if you should miss a dose?

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose.

 

Continue with the remaining doses as before. Do not take more than one dose at a time.

What you should do in case of an overdose

Although, if you accidentally take too many Kelfizine W tablets it is unlikely to be serious, you should contact your doctor or the nearest hospital casualty department immediately.

Side-effects that might happen while you are taking your medicine

In common with other drugs, this medicine sometimes causes unwanted effects in a few people.

Kelfizine W Tablets can occasionally cause nausea, vomiting and rashes.

Stop taking the tablets and contact your doctor if these effects are troubling or if at any time while taking the tablets you:

  • develop a servere skin reaction (such as inflammation or blistering of the skin, lips, eye, mouth, nose or genitals).
  • suffer from a sore throat and feel generally unwell.
  • notice red-brown spots on your skin.
  • start to bruise more easily than normal.

If you suffer from any other unwanted effects while taking your medicine, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.

Storing your medicine

You should not use the medicine after the expiry date printed on the side of the box or container.

Do not store above 25°C.

Keep out of the reach of children. Your medicine could harm them.
